(KTEN) — President Biden made several promises at the Tribal Nations Summit in Washington last week.
Some of those promises include an emphasis on teaching native languages; creating new standards for federal agencies to discuss certain issues with tribes; and a new push to strengthen tribal rights in existing treaties.
Choctaw Nation Chief Gary Batton issued a statement on the summit, saying:
"We also recognize the importance of preserving tribal rights and protections in federal law so they cannot be weakened."
This was the first in-person tribal summit in six years.
