DENISON, Texas (KTEN) — Terrell Elementary in the Denison Independent School District is one of 31 Texas schools recognized as a 2022 National Blue Ribbon School.

The award recognizes educational institutions across the country for academic performance and for closing achievement gaps between students.

Terrell Elementary Principal Amy Neidert believes the school's relationship with the students contributed to this recognition.

"At Terrell, we get to know every student — I like to say down to every little freckle on their face," Neidert said. "We just know everything about our students: What they need academically, what they need socially, what they need emotionally... and then we plan from there."

Superintendent Dr. David Kirkbride lauded the staff's effort.

"There's so much hard work that goes into every single school year," Kirkbride said "To have an honor of this magnitude and this level, we're just excited for them, excited for our community, and excited for our district as well."

Terrell Elementary is the second Denison ISD school to be named a Blue Ribbon school. The first was Golden Rule Elementary in 2007; that facility was closed in 2014.
