PLANO, Texas (KTEN) — One thousand, one-hundred and eleven flags served as the backdrop for Thursday's Congressional Veteran Commendation Program ceremony in Plano.

The event, on the eve of Veterans Day, honored 17 military members in the congressional district of Rep. Pat Fallon (R-District 4).

Fallon believes the program is not only a way to honor those who served, but is a teaching moment.

"For young people to realize the sacrifices that so many that have come before them have made," the congressman said. "When it's their time, and the baton is passed to them, they are going to be asked to do the same. If our republic is going to thrive — or heck, even survive — we are going to need that type of selflessness moving forward."

Four Grayson County former service members were among the 17 honorees at Thursday's ceremony.
