ARDMORE, Okla. (KTEN) — While many families are enjoying holiday festivities on this Labor Day weekend, Ardmore Fire Department personnel are hitting the streets throughout the city for their annual Fill the Boot fundraiser.

Fire departments across the United States partner with the International Association of Fire Fighters each year at this time to collect donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

For AFD, helping with a national cause is just as important as the work the department does within the city.

"Day in and day out, we're here in our own community; but once a year we get to kind of outreach for the entire nation and so on and so forth from there," said fire department driver Colton Carter. "It's a pretty big deal to be a part of that."

Ardmore firefighters collected more than $10,000 during last year's drive, which helps them make a positive connection with citizens.

"When we're out there, they get to know a little more about us and what we're doing and how we're better serving  and protecting them," Carter said. "It's a big deal to be in the community."

The Fill the Boot campaign continues through the weekend as AFD strives to top its 2021 total.
