(KTEN) — Health officials have identified a new COVID variant called BA.2.

This is a new sub-variant of the Omicron variant.

Oklahoma Health Department interim regional administrative director Chris Munn said while he's not surprised to learn about BA.2, he is not expecting another surge with the new variant.

"Between immunizations from getting the COVID vaccine and people that have natural immunity due to having the illness," Munn said. "Hopefully, we have a lot of people that have some natural immunity to it."

So far, the Oklahoma State Health Department says there have been only three cases in Oklahoma with the new variant.
