DENISON, Texas (KTEN) -- One Texoma family says their dog was shot outside their home, and now they're asking people to keep a close eye on their pets.

On Sunday afternoon, their four year old golden retriever, Able, was rushed to Grayson County Emergency Vet.

Owner, Misty Glenn said, "If we wouldn't have got him to the vet, he would have of course bled to death because he was bleeding of the gun shot wound."

The family said this is not the first time. "We had a red heeler and probably within four months of us moving out there he was shot, but he did not make it," stated Glenn. "They shot him through the shoulder and it went completely through his body, and he ended up passing away from his gun shot wound," she said.

One veterinarian telling Texoma what to do if this happens. "You need to call your regular veterinarian or if you can't reach them on the weekends or at night," said Veterinarian, Kenneth Stubblefield. "The Grayson County Animal Emergency Clinic is open all the time on the weekends and at night. You know, call, ask questions but more than likely we want to see your patient," he said.

The owner shared how to keep your animals safe. "I know when people live out in the country, they let their dogs roam, but there's no excuse for shooting a dog even when they are in someone else's property," stated Glenn. "There's no excuse for it. Just always protect your animals, and love them, and always be around there for them," she said.

The family said this will be a long road to recover and Grayson County Sheriff's Office said there has been a report filed but no leads at this time.
