MARSHALL COUNTY, Okla. -- The Marshall County Sheriff's Office says something as routine as paying at the pump could cost you if you're not careful.

Crooks are using electronic devices called "skimmers" to steal credit card information from unwitting motorists.

"Dispatchers took a call from a bank who said they had, I believe, four calls about fraud or skimmers," Sheriff Danny Cryer said. "They had traced it back to gas stations in Marshall County."

Cryer said this is a common type of identity theft, and it's not the first time his office has seen it. Drivers are advised to look at the gasoline pump before inserting a credit card.

"Make sure that [security] seal is unbroken and doesn't look tampered with," the sheriff said. "If it is tampered with, we strongly encourage you to contact the store clerk and let them know what's going on. Don't use your debit or credit card in any device that looks like it's been tampered with."

And if you spot what looks like a skimmer being used, call the sheriff's office immediately.

Cryer said deputies will be making regular patrols around gas stations to look for anything suspicious after hours.
