(KTEN) — We're now six months away from some big changes to Texas vehicle registration requirements.

Starting January 1, Texans won't have to take their cars to a garage for an annual safety inspection when renewing a registration.

All non-commercial cars in Texas will be charged an additional $7.50 on top of the regular registration fee as an inspection program replacement fee.

Personal vehicles registered in major metropolitan areas — including Dallas-Fort Worth — will still be subject to emissions testing. Denton and Collin counties are included in that region, but Grayson, Cooke, Fannin and Lamar counties are not.

The State of Texas will continue to require that commercial vehicles be inspected.
