BELLS, Texas (KTEN) — A Savoy man has been sentenced for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Last year, the child's mother alerted the Bells Police Department that a family friend who was living with them had sexually assaulted her 13-year-old.

An investigation found that a man identified as Shawnee Walker had been sneaking into the child's room at night for more than a month.

After being confronted by the mother, Walker, 34, made incriminating statements.

“It’s hard to wrap your brain around how someone who is a guest in a family’s home could do something this heinous," said Assistant District Attorney Elijah Brown in a written statement. "This defendant took advantage of the trust of a child and her family.”

Walker was sentenced to 30 years behind bars, and will be required to serve at least half that term before being eligible for parole consideration.

He must also register as a sex offender for life.
