HEALDTON, Okla. (KTEN) — Healdton's Cynthia Pace was found dead in her apartment Monday afternoon, over a month after her family had heard from her.

"The last time we seen her was about the 26th (of April), then he found the letter on the door about two weeks ago, saying that they haven't been able to get in contact with anyone.” Said Tabitha Howard. That’s when she and her fiancé, Justin Hood, who is Cynthia’s son, knew that something was wrong. “That's when we got really worried."

Pace's ex-husband Elmer Hood, was found in the apartment at the time her body was discovered. He has since been booked into the Carter County Detention Center and charged with desecration of a corpse, obstruction of an investigation, and resisting arrest.

"She went through so many bad things.” Howard said. “We just wanna know why. She was...a beacon in the dark, and...there wasn't a reason for it."

As the Chickasaw Lighthorse Police conduct an investigation, loved ones are focusing on fond memories with pace.

"You know, we didn't have a really, too bad of a life growing up, but it wasn't the best life, and she'd be the only one there trying to take care of us.” Said Hood. “When we didn't have nothing, she would make sure we had something."

While others, like Pace’s neighbor Shantilla Bear find themselves struggling to find the right words.

"It's tough, trying to get over the loss, it's kinda hard to say things about that, you know, the things that I remember about her."

"He just, was too careful, he just knew how to play the system.” Said Howard. “Sadly Cindy just, was too loving to even fight or talk about it anymore."

Elmer Hood was arrested in connection with the discovery of a body at a Healdton apartment.
