SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Two Sherman police officers were taken to the hospital early Monday morning after fighting with a suspect to take him into custody.

Investigators said the incident happened around 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of US 75 and Park Avenue, where 24-year-old Jose Gomez was involved in an altercation with a woman. Gomez began to hit officers before driving away; that's when police said the suspect hit two patrol cars before being arrested.

Jose Gomez was arrested after allegedly assaulting Sherman police officers on March 4, 2024.

The injured officers were taken to Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center for treatment and later released.

"They had come back to the station and began the preliminary reports about what they needed to get done before they left for the day," said police spokesperson Lt. Jeremy Cox.

Cecilia Finch has lived on Park Avenue for the last two years. She was alarmed to learn that police officers were hurt on her street.

"It's very uncommon, especially police officers, because they take care of stuff," she said.

Gomez was booked into the Grayson County Jail on multiple charges, including assault on a public servant, resisting arrest, felon with a firearm, and criminal mischief.
