SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Starting Monday, the City of Denison Municipal Court is hosting its amnesty program.

The program is designed to help people that have outstanding misdemeanor warrants reduce their fees by donating canned goods.

Their warrant fines can be reduced by $75 with 10 cans or $125 with 20 cans of donated food.

"Our court team works really really hard with a lot of the citizens in the City of Denison," said city spokesperson Emily Agans. "They got together a couple of years ago and said, 'How can we help people? How can we help people who may need some assistance paying off their fines?' This is one of the ways that they came up with... doing that."

Court staff started the program five years ago, with their highest number reaching over a thousand canned goods.

The rebate offer continues through Friday, March 1.
