SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — According to the American Spa News, surveys show that 60 percent of men and 48 percent of women skip washing their face before bedtime.

The cold weather conditions in Texoma make it critical to wash the face daily because it can lead to irritation and dryness of the skin.

"This time of year is hard on our skin," said Dr. Mark Koone with Texoma Associated Dermatologists. "The problem is, the heated air inside your house probably has a relatively humidity of about 20 to 25 percent, and that dry air dries out our skin. It causes everybody to just have a little bit of a winter itch or winter eczema."

Sometimes setting up a humidifier in your home can help re-moisturize the air;  even adjusting your water temperature when bathing can. help.

"Trying to not use like excessively hot water — I know, it's hard to do in cold weather — but if you can tamper it back on the the hotness of the water, sometimes that'll help prevent some of the dryness of the skin," Koone said.

Dry skin can be avoided with a good unscented moisturizer and mild soap skin care routine every night.

All skin care products recommended are easily accessible and affordable to buy; it doesn't always have to be a high end or overpriced product.

"The brand name stuff like Cerave, Usirin, and um... Neutrogena, La Roche Poise... a lot of those are pretty good," Koone said.

Maintaining healthy skin can also help prevent bacteria and skin illnesses.
