ADA, Okla. (KTEN) — The Spring 2024 semester has brought student's back to East Central University's campus from across the state and beyond, while also sending away students on their way to an international university.

"They will see a demonstration of those important concepts," said Dr. Mara Sukholutskaya director of Global Education at ECU. "In a different setting."

Two ECU business majors are headed to South America, to experience the culture in Curitiba, Brazil.

"They will learn a little bit about language, they will learn about the cuisine, said Dr. Sukholutskaya. "They will go to a carnival, maybe learn how to dance samba or maybe they will go to a soccer game and see Brazilian fans in action."

Junior Arely Hernandez, will be returning to the country her mother grew up in.

“It’s super weird but super cool at the same time,"  said Hernandez. "My extended family over there the last time I saw them I was three years old, so I don’t know much about them so I’ll be able to see that part of my mom’s life and the people she grew up around and her family.”

Sophomore Rosie Coleman moved to the U.S. from Uganda when she was three and is eager to go abroad.

"I think it's absolutely amazing, said Coleman. "And that I got to be picked to be able to go do this program and be the first to go I think it's a great opportunity, an opportunity of a lifetime."

The traveling duo will fly out next week to begin their journey in Brazil.
