(KTEN) — It's National School Choice Week.

The Parental Choice Tax Credit Program was passed in Oklahoma last year.  It gives parents control over how their children are educated.

Oklahoma State Superintendent of Education Ryan Walters said he has seen academic achievement increase with the help of school choice in the Sooner State.

"We want parents involved; we want parents empowered," he said. "The more you empower parents and give them more say in their kids' education, the more successful their kids are going to be."

Walters said he hopes that Texas will follow in Oklahoma's footsteps to promote school choice.
