GUNTER, Texas (KTEN) — Gunter Mayor Karen Souther announced an emergency city council meeting  Monday evening following the resignation of all five council members in a matter of months.

The purpose of the meeting was to formally accept their resignations and swear in new appointees.

But four of the five outgoing members failed to appear for the 6 o'clock session, leaving the council unable to achieve the quorum needed to conduct official business.

The City of Gunter remains without a city council.

As the new council members wait in the wings, it is still unknown how the city will fill other vacant positions like city attorney and director of economic development.

The five council members turned in their letters of resignation last week following other city staffers who quit in November.

In their resignation letters, several of the former council members cited a toxic work environment as a major reason for their departure.
