USL Texoma announces plans to join USL League One in 2025
SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN)- Professional soccer is officially coming to Texoma.
USL Texoma announced Monday that the club will begin play in 2025 in USL League One, the third tier of soccer in the U.S.
The club held its official launch at Bearcat Stadium in Sherman Monday morning.
USL Texoma's men's professional team will begin play there with hopes to build its own stadium in the future.
In addition to that men's professional team, the club will also add a women's pre-professional team in 2026. The club already has a functioning youth academy that will be looking for additional players this winter.
Now, the club's name is not official yet. USL Texoma is currently serving as just a placeholder.
The club is seeking community input before its official branding is announced in December.
But for co-owners Ben Watson and Simon Keizer, who both are Texoma locals, Monday was a day they had long dreamed of.
"One year ago to this day, Ben and I crafted this idea. It's been years in the making in a lot of ways," Keizer said. "Today is a day of celebration for us. It's a marker day where we begin the next chapter of the journey."
And Watson believes that next chapter is occurring at a time when soccer is peaking in the United States.
"When you talk about the FIFA Club World Cup coming in 2025 and the FIFA World Cup in 2026, there's a lot of excitement," Watson said. "To have a once in a lifetime runway around the sport of soccer in the United States mixed with the growth of Texoma and what's coming here, it really is perfect timing."
