SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — The Southgate Apartments in Sherman are set to be demolished.

The complex was built in the 1960s. It is located next to Washington Elementary School. The process has taken two years, and the city will pay $240,000 for the buildings and for the cost of the demolition.

"The buildings were in such poor condition you just couldn't even rent them out," said Sherman city spokesperson Nate Strauch. "So it's a good situation: No one is getting displaced, no one is getting removed and we can have these buildings gone and put that property back to good use."

The demolition process is scheduled to begin at the end of this month.

A fire in January damaged some of the apartments in the 900 block of South Travis Street; it had been vacant since June 2022.
