New historical marker coming to Grayson County
SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) -- Since 2020, activists n Grayson County have pushed for a new historical marker to commemorate the Sherman Riot of 1930.
In 1930, a mob lynched a black man named, George Hughes, and burned the old Grayson County Courthouse.
The Texas Historical Commission returned the marker inscription, and it's been accepted by the Grayson County Historical Commission.
"If we are going to move forward, reconciliation has to happen, and from that reconciliation is acknowledgment that, hey, this is something that we have to make sure never happens again," said Kurt Cichowski, chairman on the Sherman Riot of 1930 Historical Marker.
Cichowski hopes to have the marker in place next year at the Grayson County Courthouse.
