WILSON, Okla. (KTEN) — On August 26, a car accident on State Highway 76 in Love County took the lives of two Wilson teens:  17-year-old Makayla Cantrell and Michael Whatley, 19.

Thursday afternoon, Michael Whatley was laid to rest with funeral proceedings at the First Baptist Church of Wilson, with hundreds of people from the Town of Wilson in attendance.

Whatley, a 2022 graduate of Wilson High School, had been part of the football and cross country teams ,and showed pigs as a part of the school's Future Farmers of America program.

Soon after graduation, Michael began his career as an apprentice at Keeton Plumbing.

In a statement to KTEN, Michael's father, Brad, said he's thankful for the amount of overwhelming support, adding that it's amazing that the town of Wilson came together in the midst of tragedy. He said his heart goes out to the family of Makayla Cantrell.

In light of Thursday's funeral service, Wilson Public Schools canceled classes for the day.
