Long road ahead for Van Alstyne repaving project
VAN ALSTYNE, Texas (KTEN) — Motorists in Van Alstyne are are bracing for more than two years of road construction on FM 121.
Last month, the Texas Department of Transportation began work on a $10.7 million pavement resurfacing project from the intersection of Main Drive east almost 11 miles to State Highway 160.
TxDOT said the plan is to widen and repave the existing roadway while replacing culverts and installing new pavement markings. This project will require daily lane closures.
Paul Hickson, who lives near the construction zone, said travel has been reduced to one lane on-and-off over the past week. He said it can take up to 15 minutes just to exit his driveway when one lane is closed.
"Once they start moving the traffic again — especially in the afternoon when school is out — then it moves the whole time," Hickson said. "When it stops, it still stops traffic in front of us. So, when somebody don't let you out, you can't get out."
The road project is scheduled to be complete in January 2026.
