BONHAM, Texas (KTEN) — Fannin County is looking for a new Precinct 1 commissioner, a district that covers the northwest portion of the county.

Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham said the seat was recently vacated by Edwina Lane, who accepted another job in county government.

Cunningham said commissioners are looking for someone who can handle the administrative side of the job as well as dealing with road management.

"It's very important that they not only be looking down at the roads, but looking ahead into the future," Cunningham said. "We're going to a birth, into a new era, got development going on, got a lot of things we got to stay on top of."

The judge said the goal right now is to get as many applicants as possible for the vacant seat. The deadline is set for August 3rd by 5 p.m., Cunningham said he will wait until there are enough candidates to pick the best person for the job.

"We're at about seven applications that have come in, and we have requests for applications that haven't come in yet," he said. "People have come in and said 'I'm interested; can I have an application?' We say here, get it in as soon as possible."

Interested? You can apply online if you've lived in Fannin County for at least 12 months, and in Precinct 1 for 6 months. Applicants must be 18 years or older with no criminal record.
