ATOKA COUNTY, Okla. (KTEN) — The two-lane highway between Atoka and Wapanucka was closed to traffic for more than four hours Tuesday morning after a fatal crash just before 7:30.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said State Highway 7 was shut down near South Bob White Lane, around 5 miles east of Wapanucka, after the accident involving an 18-wheeler and a pickup truck.

OHP said the driver of the smaller eastbound truck drifted left of the center line as it rounded a curve, colliding head-on with the westbound big rig.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as 40-year-old West Barris of Atoka, died in the crash. The other driver was taken to a local hospital and checked out against medical advice.

The impact sent the engine of the pickup into a ditch on the side of the road.

One lane of Highway 7 was later reopened as the disabled big rig was being removed and traffic was fully restored shortly after noon.
