SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Every year at the end of May, we pause to honor the people who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

"You get emotional; you get patriotic; you get this sense of belonging to something bigger than you," said Cesar Saenz from Sherman VFW Post 2772.

On Saturday morning, the Sherman VFW invites you to join them at West Hill Cemetery on Saturday morning to remember our fallen warriors

"We will be placing flags in every grave that we can find that has a veteran's marker on it," Saenz said. "It's an honor, because those guys have given so much for our country, obviously. Some perished in war; others came afterwards. Just going in there is just an honor to give back my time to give to theirs. Some of their families come out, and to see them and the outpour of volunteers that come out to do this, it means a lot."

It is a day to remember the men and women who chose to answer the call.

"It's just a reminder of the sacrifices that have been made by our military for our freedom," said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Capt. Scott Hampton. "It's a day we should all remember."

"Sacrifice. It means those that have loved this country for what is has stood for for so long, and their sacrifice to this country," Saenz added.

However you choose to observe Memorial Day this weekend, take a moment to remember the price of freedom… and the Americans who lost their lives defending our country.

"They're family to us... every veteran," Saenz said. "It just feels like there's a common brotherhood. As much we make fun of one another — that comes with the territory — but when we're called into arms, when we're called to duty... we were always there."

Local veteran organizations will participate in a Memorial Day ceremony at West Hill Cemetery on Monday, May 29 at 10 a.m. The public is invited.
