(KTEN) – After a quick start to the year, severe weather is looking to take a back seat as we round out the month of May. The start to 2023 featured a record number of tornadoes for January and February in Oklahoma.

So far this year, Texoma has only observed one tornado; a far cry from the average number of tornadoes that typically occur up to May 24.

The sole tornado was rated as an EF-1 and traveled 5 miles near the town of Broken Bow, OK. No injuries or deaths were reported with this tornado.

In total, 48 tornadoes have hit Oklahoma this year, which is slightly above the average of 41 tornadoes from January to May in any given year.

Typically, May sees the most number of tornadoes within a given year with 24 tornadoes touching down. So far this May, only 10 tornadoes have been observed.

With the jet stream lifting north, it appears severe weather will remain unlikely for a little while. Hopefully this means that the severe weather season is over for spring 2023. Of course we will keep you updated if severe weather jumps back in the forecast.
