DENISON, Texas (KTEN) — Sherry Rumsey and her husband were watching TV in their home Monday evening when they heard a loud "pop" and felt the house shake, followed by the sound of the chimney's siding falling down.

"We went out into the back yard because that's where we heard things falling, and sure enough... immediately Robert went upstairs, 'cause we thought that's where it's gonna start," Rumsey said.

Lightning had struck the chimney, setting the attic ablaze. Rumsey said the insulation kept the fire at a smolder and prevented it from spreading to the rest of the house.

But every surface in the home is now covered in soot and smoke.

Rumsey praised the quick response by Denison Fire Rescue, arriving 15 minutes after the strike. Now, the Rumseys must wait for insurance to assess the damage before they can return to their home and begin cleaning up.
