ADA, Okla. (KTEN) — As Ada High School's performing arts program grows, its leader — Merrie Palmer — is being recognized as a finalist for the Southeast Oklahoma Teacher of the Year award.

Taking on the role of fine arts director, being a teacher of speech and debate, competitive drama, stage craft and a coach of the Ada Cougar Pom Squad, Merrie Palmer was nominated by Ada High School administration to receive regional recognition.

"It's lovely when we get some fine arts recognition in rural schools; more importantly, the fine arts in southeastern Oklahoma," Palmer said. "We need the fine arts to be recognized more and more. I'm so excited to represent that avenue."

Palmer will find out on April 27 if she will be named Teacher of the Year. Nineteen other teachers in the 21-county region are also nominated.

"She's not only involved with performing arts, but competitive drama. Kids cling and jump to her to follow her, and it helps her program," said Ada High School Vice Principal Kolby Howry. "Her competitive drama team is currently in the state running. That just goes to show what this program means, and kids jumping in and having success within her programs."

Regardless if she's named Teacher of the Year, Merrie Palmer said being named a finalist is enough to highlight the work of all the teachers at Ada High.
