McALESTER, Okla. (KTEN) — McAlester police Officer Joseph Barlow died Monday after suffering critical injuries in a crash on Friday.

Barlow had been part of an escort from Tulsa to Wetumka for the casket of McAlester police colleague Capt. Richard Parker, who died earlier last week.

Police said another vehicle crashed head-on into Barlow's vehicle in Glenpool, Oklahoma.

Barlow succumbed to his injuries on Monday surrounded by family, friends and law enforcement officers, police said.

"Barlow served not only his nation in the United States Army, but his community of McAlester with great pride," McAlester police said in a statement posted to Facebook. "We ask that you keep officer Barlow's friends, family and community in your thoughts as they grieve this great loss and continue to cope [with recent] tragedies."

Before his death was announced, Barlow's family released this statement:

"We have received an outpouring of love, support and prayers, [for] which we are grateful ... We are completely devastated with the events that have occurred on March 17th surrounding the automobile collision that occurred on while the McAlester Police Department and other Law Enforcement Agencies in the State were escorting our fallen brother Captain Richard Parker home."

According to published reports, a motorist identified as Martin Rivas Rodriguez of Tulsa was arrested at the scene of the crash, charged with reckless driving and causing an accident with great bodily injury. It's expected that additional charges will follow.
