GAINESVILLE, Texas (KTEN) — With a warrant for evading arrest in Sulphur, Joshua Daniel Moreno was reported to be in Gainesville just before noon on Tuesday.

Gainesville police were alerted to his presence at the QuikTrip and when they attempted to pull his vehicle over, Moreno drove away.

Police said Moreno was driving at unsafe speeds headed northbound on Interstate 35.

Texas Highway Patrol troopers deployed spike strips on the highway, and Moreno drove over them, losing three tires.

The fugitive gave up on the vehicle after a few more miles and then fled on foot.

"Ran to the west crossing the southbound lanes of traffic on Interstate 35 and into a wooded area," said Gainesville police Chief Kevin Phillips. "We had officers... multiple officers from our department and also the Cooke County Sheriff's Office respond to that area, extensive search. But it is fairly dense, and we weren't able to locate him."

Phillips said Moreno now faces warrants out of Gainesville; one for evading arrest, and one for a controlled substance found in his vehicle.

Moreno was wearing was a gray shirt and blue jeans when last seen; he was not believed to be armed.
