DENISON, Texas (KTEN) —  More than a dozen vessels were lost as fire swept a boathouse at the Eisenhower Yacht Club Marina on Christmas Eve.

Temperatures in the 20s greeted firefighters like Craig Reed who struggled to bring the blaze under control.

"When we got there, of course, can't tell you an exact number — about 5 or 6 boats on the shore on fire, and there were about 4 to 5 boats still in the marina," he said. "Anything we did with water froze."

The marina's owner said the fire ultimately consumed 15 boats and four personal watercraft; the boathouse itself was severely damaged.

All but one boat and one personal watercraft sank, leaving Reed doubtful that the cause of the blaze can be determined.

"When you do have a boat fire, they will usually burn down to the water line or close to it, so all your evidence is burned away... there is nothing left to investigate," he said.

In a statement, the marina's owner said that despite the unfortunate event, he feels blessed that nobody was injured, and the fire did not spread to any other structures.
