DURANT, Okla. (KTEN) — Dobson Fiber took another step toward its plan to provide faster internet for the people and businesses of Durant.

"Faster internet is definitely beneficial to the community," said a student named Cameron.

Faster internet means better productivity all across rural Oklahoma.

"We are announcing our multi-million dollar commitment to bring fiber internet to the majority of residents and businesses here," said Ali Clark with Dobson Fiber.

While the city believes this project will pay off in the long run, there will be some growing pains.

"There will be a lot of construction that they will be doing as they begin to lay the fiber optics in the area," said Janet Reed with the Durant Chamber of Commerce. "Everything will be done underground, as I'm understanding it."

Despite construction, higher internet speeds will be welcome.

"Me being a college student, me having assignments due, having a faster, reliable internet source is important," Cameron said. "I also think that it probably will help out other people who have an at-home business, or at-home parents, that will probably help them out a lot, too."

Local businesses also stand to benefit.

"Without internet we can't use our POS system, which means we can't do our transactions," said Grace Rudolf with Lost St. Brewing Company. "Without internet, we're kind of just stuck."

Durant-area residents can check the Dobson Fiber website to see if the service is coming to their neighborhood.
