Big sendoff as Gunter heads to playoffs
GUNTER, Texas (KTEN) — The Gunter Tigers left the high school Friday afternoon bound for Abilene, Texas, where they will play their highly anticipated state semifinal matchup against Canadian.
This is the sixth time in the last seven years that the Tigers have reached the semi's in their quest for a state championship.
Gunter won 14 straight games headed to Friday's crucial matchup.
Even Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance to wish the Tigers well before they started their four-hour bus trip to Abilene, which was interrupted by minor accident with a delivery truck along the way. No one was hurt.
"I am so excited!" said Christine Lowery, whose son is one of the players. "I know Gunter is going to take it home; they are going to win, without a doubt."
The Gunter football Horn Crew also has its sights set on another trip to AT&T Stadium next week for the state championship game.
"I feel like we got a little more athleticism; we got some experience on the team," said Jay Brummett. "We got some seniors... we are a very fast team, very disciplined team. I wouldn't second guess myself that we are one of the hardest-working teams in the State of Texas."
The game against Canadian was scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. Friday. The KTEN Sports team of Davis Baker and Kinsey Lee will have highlights and reaction from Abilene on KTEN News at 10.
