DENISON, Texas (KTEN)—Denison Police Department K9 Echo received a bulletproof vest thanks to fundraising by the Denison Citizen Police Academy.

Echo's new wardrobe addition is rated for up to .44 magnum pistol rounds and protects against blunt force trauma, almost as effective as vests worn by his two-legged colleagues.

"With these vests, we don't want them too heavy for the dogs so they can still operate, so they can still move and run, especially when they're exposed with heat with all their fur," Echo's handler Officer Tyler Buchanan said. "We don't want anything too heavy on them that's gonna hinder them from doing their job, so this vest is a really good compromise."

The vest is custom-fitted to Echo's measurements and cost just under $1,000.
