GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KTEN) – On Wednesday, folks gathered at The Railyard in Denison for a fundraising trivia night.

“Trivia night seems to be a Grayson County get-together, a common thing in the community that people like to do,” said Summer Junior from the Grayson County Children’s Advocacy Center.

That was only the warmup to their actual fundraiser, NTX Giving Day.

“It’s a $5 voluntary contribution to participate in the trivia,” Junior said. “And it just goes to whatever organization you want to give to.”

Money donated during Thursday's big event (with more than $34 million raised  across North Texas as of mid-afternoon) will eventually be used by those organizations so they can maintain services.

“That can be family advocacy support services, that can be our therapy program, which provides the trauma support services for kids,” Junior said.

In 2021, generous donors helped the United Way of Grayson County a lot.

“Last year we raised about $1,500," said Lauryn Wise. “I would say every organization is different.”

Their main focus is literacy. Wise said that can lead to a reduction in crime rates.

“That program focuses directly on grade-level reading, kindergarten through 3rd grade,” she said. “Statistics show that if children don’t know how to read by third grade that they likely never will.”

According to the Children’s Advocacy Center, they’ve served more than 1,300 people over the past year alone.
