VAN ALSTYNE, Texas (KTEN) -- Van Alstyne police have new Level III ballistic shields. Each patrol car will be equipped with one shield along with new equipment to prepare police for emergency situations.

We are told these shields can withstand rifle shots, and are lightweight enough for officers to stay mobile.

"This is our first time that we have deployed ballistic shields," said Chief Tim Barnes. "The technology has come so far from the heavy ones that used to be common in law enforcement."

The chief added that most police departments in this area will start to acquire similar shields to better ensure safety.
