SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Funeral arrangements have been announced for former Sherman Independent School District Superintendent Dr. David Hicks, who  died unexpectedly Friday at age 55.

His death was confirmed by Northwest ISD in suburban Fort Worth, where Hicks began duties as superintendent on May 17 after spending six years as Sherman ISD's chief educator.

In a statement, Northwest ISD said Hicks' "life ended unexpectedly on Friday, September 9, after a medical emergency." No additional details were provided.

“Our hearts are broken by the loss of Dr. David Hicks,” said Brad Morgan, president of the Sherman ISD Board of Trustees, in a written statement. “He was responsible for taking Sherman ISD to another level with facilities, curriculum, and the well being of our great staff. Today, there is a building block that is missing in Building Bearcats. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Tammy, and their family.” 

A funeral service for Hicks has been scheduled for Saturday, September 17 at the Sherman High School gym at 2 p.m. Visitation will be Friday at the same location from 6 to 8 p.m., with a viewing at 1 p.m. Saturday.
