(KTEN) — The Labor Day weekend is here as the Texas statewide gas price average fell for the 11th week in a row.

Prices dropped to as low as $2.99 in Van Alstyne, a level not seen in months.

"Perfect timing for the Labor Day holiday weekend," said Brad Douglass, CEO of Douglass Distributing. "It's still about 28 percent more than it was this time last year, but still prices are going down, and we are excited."

And that is making travel plans a lot less stressful for families hoping to enjoy the three-day weekend,

"It's kind of nice to get here and it's $3.19...  $3.05 just a few miles away when we pulled over and got gas," said motorist Daniel Hernandez.

"I think it's great!" added Elaine Cesare. "I am just trying to get home, and it's a lot better than what it has been."

AAA Texas said the cost for fuel has reached its lowest point in six months.

"What OPEC said yesterday was that they expected lower demand both in the U.S. as well as China, and that's just because of the recession, the oncoming recession in both of those major industrial crude-consuming economies," Douglass said.

Texas drivers on the go this weekend can expect to pay the second-lowest average gas price in the nation.
