HUGO, Okla. (KTEN) — The suspect in a January murder case was found dead in his Choctaw County Jail cell last week, less than two weeks after he had been assaulted by two other inmates.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said Charles Gilliland, 64, was jailed on first degree murder charges in the January 22 shooting death of Kevin Roberson in Boswell.

OSBI said Gilliland had been assaulted in the jail by two inmates on August 18. Due to his injuries, Gilliland was airlifted to an Oklahoma City hospital for treatment.

After being returned to jail, the OSBI said Gilliland was isolated from other inmates.

"During the evening hours of August 31, 2022, Gilliland possibly suffered a medical emergency and stopped breathing," the OSBI statement said. "Life saving measures were attempted, however efforts to revive him were unsuccessful..."

The results of an autopsy will determine whether the August 18 assault contributed to Gilliland's death, and whether the inmates involved could face charges.
