DURANT, Oklahoma (KTEN) -- The City of Durant prides itself on being able to provide its citizens with the information and ability to create and start their own small businesses.

"That is the one nice thing about Durant, is that we have space to build," said Durant Chamber of Commerce member Jeremy Spence. "And there are a lot of pockets to develop. Great way to keep the community connected and still grow economically."

This initiative is run by Builders and Backers, a company that helps train anyone to become a business owner with its Idea Accelerator program. So what kind of person are they looking for?

"If you're somebody that has an idea about a business that would help our community... something that's missing that would fill a gap," said Lisa Taylor, Durant's Economic Development Director.

After filling out an application, Builders and Backers will select five small businesses, give them $5,000, and train them.

"By the end of the program, if you have a viable business idea then you should be ready for the next steps," Taylor said.

It's something that will really help those who are not sure what they're doing, but have an idea they want to do.

"They've got a business plan," said Spence. "They've got financing in place, all that stuff. There's a lot of people with just a great idea and who don't know how to take the first step."

Those who've started businesses before say it's something they wish they'd had.

"I think it's absolutely phenomenal," said Stephanie Swicker, owner of U-We Design. "I would have given anything to have presented this idea to someone and have them say, 'Here, let me show you how to set this thing up.'"
