Gunter turns page on state championship loss, ready for 2022
GUNTER, Texas (KTEN) - If there is one thing that Gunter football is accustomed to, its winning. They have won so much, that the goal is always to play for a state championship.
"Last year's team is last year's team," said head coach Jake Fieszel. "This is this year's team. You kind of close the books on that, it's always going to be there but at the same time we're totally focused on what's ahead of us and what we can do right now to be the absolute best team this year."
The Tigers came up just short, falling to Franklin in the 3A DII state title game last December. It is hard to just erase that memory but the players know they have another shot to be great this season.
"It still gives you a nasty taste in your mouth," said senior receiver Ethan Sloan. "It's just motivation, we want to go back and finish it off right this time."
"I definitely used it for my off season but now we have bigger goals," said senior quarterback Ivy Hellman. "We have different motivations, we're just trying to get to the state game this year."
