SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Juneteenth is a federal holiday to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

On Saturday, Texomans met a Martin Luther King Park to celebrate, and this year's theme was Sankofa Journey.

"'Sankofa' means it is not forbidden to look back to move forward in a positive way," said Grayson United president Erik Jackson. "So that's what Sankofa is about. We're looking back on history, and we're going to move forward and build and love each other."

Jackson said it is important to remember our history so that we won't repeat it.
