DENISON, Texas (KTEN) — The Denison Independent School District paused Monday to honor the 19 elementary students and two teachers who died in a brutal gun massacre in Uvalde, Texas, last Tuesday.

Families and staff members gathered outside the Denison ISD Administration Building to express their love and support, placing 21 flags to remember the innocent victims of the incident at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

"This could have been our community," said Denison ISD Assistant Superintendent Dr. David Kirkbride. "I just believe in the power of people, the power of love and support and coming together when tragedy occurs. We need to pull together."

Kirkbride said the flags will remain as a reminder to support their school family and the families of Uvalde.

Denison ISD has pledged to "continue to make the security and well-being of our district and community the absolute highest of priorities."
