DURANT, Okla (KTEN) -- The Choctaw Nation recognizing the month of May as foster care awareness month.

The nation held a fun run to bring awareness to children in the foster care system who need a place to call home.

We're told 400 Choctaw children are either in state or tribal custody.

"You, yourself could have a relative that's in need of a home, and we just love our children and we believe the importance of faith, family, culture, and Choctaw Nation states on that premise and we believe our homes could provide the needs for those kids, said Choctaw Director of foster care, Angela Connor.

Connor says they hope to continue this run every year to bring awareness to children in foster care.
