(KTEN) — The Oklahoma State Department of Health reports 8,544 new cases of COVID-19, up more than 15 percent from last week.

While 57 percent of eligible Oklahomans are fully vaccinated, fewer than 40 percent of 18 to 34-year-olds fall into that category.

Health officials are urging everyone age 5 and up to get the jab. And the health department's regional office recommends that you follow all health guidelines — including staying home for New Year's Eve celebrations if you feel sick.

Jemima Anguiano said she won't be going out on Friday night

"We're doing like a small celebration at the house with just close friends and family, but it will be a small reunion and we just get together," she said.

The health department said it's best to celebrate the arrival of 2022 with a small group at home to help stop the spread of COVID.
