ARDMORE, Okla. (KTEN) -- A California man is under arrest in Carter County after sending Wilson's police chief to the hospital.

Chief Kevin Coley said said authorities received a frantic call on Monday from a man later identified as Zai Zhu, of Oakland, California, who said he was driving to the police station for help.

After he arrived, Zhu, 42, told officers that his wife's boyfriend was chasing him with a gun.

That's when the suspect got back in his car and sped away clocked at nearly 80 mph, forcing at least four other vehicles to take evasive action.

Zhu was pulled over and arrested. Chief Coley said as he was taking the suspect to Mercy Hospital in Ardmore for treatment of a foot injury, Zhu was "paranoid" that every car they passed was trying to kill him.

Coley said Zhu slipped out of his seatbelt and began kicking the squad car's door and metal cage.

Coley pulled over to restrain the suspect. As he attempted to cuff Zhu's legs, he was kicked in the head.

Chief Coley was taken to the hospital for treatment. He was later released, but said he's still not 100 percent as of Wednesday.

Zhu was booked on Monday night and is facing a variety of charges, including assault of a police officer, resisting arrest, and driving without a valid license.

Bond was set at $15,000. A preliminary conference was set for July 8.
