Ardmore school gets $50K donation from Dollar General
ARDMORE, Okla. (KTEN) -- Dollar General executives came to Jefferson Elementary School on Tuesday bearing a gift box. What was inside?
"Fifty-thousand dollars! I'm just overwhelmed," exclaimed Assistant Principal Donna Blackmon. "There are a lot of areas we can use it."
The donation is a part of Dollar General's Reading Revolution program inspired by the company's late co-founder J.L. Turner, who could only read at a 3rd grade level. The intention is to help instill a love for reading at a young age.
"Today's presentation reflects our mission of serving others, and ongoing efforts to support literacy and educational initiatives in the communities that we call home," Dollar General senior director Riley Seals said.
The $50,000 will help Jefferson Elementary live up to that mission.
"We have a literacy program, and with the pandemic and technology uses, we can use it in those areas," Blackmon said.
The school has received donations from Dollar General before, but this is the biggest ever.
In total, Dollar General has donated more than $3.8 million to schools since 2013.
