A grand re-opening for Sherman's Grand Central Station
SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) -- Sherman's Grand Central Station launched a building campaign to purchase and renovate a new facility.
The organization — which provides nutrition, education and other necessities for the homeless and those in need — received $900,000 in donations to realize its vision.
Long-time client Donny Bruce has been anxiously waiting for meals at Grand Central Station to get back to "normal."
"This is delicious right here, you know," he said. "Great, hot... we are so glad to have it back, because we missed it so much."
The people receiving the meals aren't the only ones excited.
"This was the first time that we came and have had hot meals in about a year, so our clients were very pleased," said interim GCS director Jerry Holbert.
"I love it," added head chef Regina Foster. "It's a blessing; I want to say that first. It's a blessing to have this kitchen. It has three times the space that I used to have."
The new facility at 619 East Houston Street also offers access to other needed services.
"Commercial washers and dryers? We've got a whole bank of them," Holbert said. "We've got multiple showers now -- men's and women's showers. Restrooms. We have computers where they can sit down and do some work they might need to do for filling out forms."
It's a place for everyone to enjoy.
"We want to make them feel like this is special, and that they are special, and that this is a special place for them," Holbert said.
Grand Central Station's former headquarters across the street will now be used as a storage spot for food and other items.
The organization is excited to be back serving three meals a day for those in need.
Donny Bruce summed it up this way: "I love it because it's part of my morning routine."
