SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) -- Petty Officer Larry Wright spent five years in the U.S. Navy. Now a civilian, he spends his time helping veterans cope with PTSD, TBI or military sexual assault.

"Larry Wright is always on call to help anyone in need," said Charles Holcomb, who nominated Wright as this month's Texoma Hero.

"To know that I'm recognized for being a help in the community and for helping other veterans, that's what I'm so proud of doing," Wright said.

A Whitesboro native, Wright was first sent to medical school as a corpsman. He then volunteered to serve in Vietnam before heading to Nevada.

From saving lives in combat to saving them back in Texoma, Wright's efforts don't go unnoticed.

"I'm on the Marine Corps League, I'm treasurer and secretary of the Vietnam Veterans Association, a member of the VFW in Sherman," Wright said.

He said he never thinks about the praise he gets for his service; he's focused on the people he's serving.

"I'm surrounded by heroes, and I appreciate each one of you so much," Wright said as he received his recognition. "It took me years, but I'm so thankful that I ran into people like Charles [Holcomb] and others in the Marine Corps League that gave me confidence and made me want to be a part of that."
