How to handle winter storm insurance claims
DENISON, Texas -- Let's talk about what to do if your home was damaged in this week's winter storm.
We checked with local insurance agents today. State Farm said it had more than 18,000 thousand claims filed across Texas in just one week.
Homeowners are advised to document everything; take pictures of damaged property and save all emails exchanged with your insurance agent.
"What we advise our clients to do is stop the damage," said State Farm agent Jim McClure. "If you can find a way to get your water turned off so it doesn't continue to create damage... if you have to have receipts or those type of things, gather those up. Texas typically has higher deductibles than some other states."
McClure urges people to pay close attention when buying insurance coverage for these circumstances; the wording of claims can be confusing, so read closely.\
