Free meals in trying times for Denison's essential workers

DENISON, Texas (KTEN) -- With power out and water at a premium, The Railyard in Denison is doing what it can to make sure first responders get what they need.
The Railyard is providing free meals and coffee with the help of Panera Bread, CJ's Coffee and the Denison Chamber of Commerce.
"It's great to have that hometown feel where we can walk into a place here on Main Street and get warmed up, have a bagel and some coffee," said Denison police Chief Mike Gudgel.
The people of Denison are helping out their police officers, firefighters and utility workers.
"I've got water, I've got heat, so we thought, 'Why not just have them come here?" said Railyard owner Josh Massey. "If nothing else they could take a shower, could cook a meal... they could at least get warmed up for a little while. Then it came to my attention that there are places in Grayson County that weren't really being designated for that, so I've got 4,000 square feet of hot air and television."
It's a reminder that our first responders are not going unnoticed.
"We don't stop working at the fire department or the police department," Chief Gudgel said. "Our utility crews are doing everything they can, working 24/7 right now, to repair these main breaks and get us back up to where we need to be in the City of Denison."
Massey's no stranger to cities coming together to take care of their own.
"Early on in my life I started seeing that there's a way for business owners and community members to really step up and do something positive, and Denison has that same feel," Massey said.
Togetherness is what Denison is all about.
"The businesses in town, everything we do has to be done together," Massey said. "It really feels like this is the kind of place where if you need help, there are people who have been blessed with abundance that can help."
